Organic certification is provided by USDA Organic, a certification process that is provided to organic farmers and organic food producers in the European Union who use biological products to grow organic food and agricultural products, as well as those who manufacture biological products. In most cases, any company that is involved in food production can be certified, including seed suppliers, farmers, food processors, retailers, and restaurants. Organic textile (or organic clothing) certification, which encompasses certification of textiles made from organic fibers, is a lesser-known analogy.

BRCGS has been the standard for almost a decade, providing excellence. Over 22,000 facilities in over 130 countries have adopted the standard, and 70% of the world’s 10 largest retailers, 60% of the world’s 10 largest fast food restaurants, and 50% of the world’s 25 largest manufacturers have adopted it. Currently, the 9th edition of the standard is in its third year, and it is constantly being revised to protect the consumer. This standard was the first to be benchmarked by GFSI, and was also the first standard to be formally based on GFSI 1 with a food safety culture and a food fraud standard defined and reduced audit burden through additional modules, implementing new requirements for a food safety culture, and defining more broadly related to food fraud, which define more food fraud and reduce the burden of audits through standards for which standards have been set.

CERES is an international inspection and certification body for organic food, organic and sustainable textiles, GLOBALG.A.P., food sustainability, and climate and environmental standards. An environmental certification scheme is when a third party evaluates your business operations and processes. They check whether your company uses environmentally friendly practices in a sustainable way.

Fair Trade certification is the certification of products within the market-based fair trade movement. The most common type of fair trade certification is the FLO International Fair Trade Certified Mark, which is used in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The Fair Trade Certified Mark is the North American equivalent of the International Fair Trade Certification Mark. As of January 2011, more than 1,000 companies were certified by FLO International and about 1,000 more by other ethical and fair trade certification schemes around the world.

The first standard of the ISO 22000 series, ISO 22000:2005 “Management systems for food safety and food products – Requirements for all organizations in the supply chain” was published by the International Organization for Standardization ISO in 2005. This is the first international standard on the basis of which a food safety management system can be implemented and certified. It addresses the issues of communicating, managing the system and controlling food safety risks.

Kosher is a Hebrew word meaning “fit,” “right,” or “proper.” Nowadays, it is mostly used to describe food and beverages that comply with Jewish religious dietary laws.

In order for a product to be certified as kosher and receive a certificate, every ingredient, food additive, and processing additive used in its production must also be kosher. To obtain a kosher certificate, the production process must meet the requirements and therefore must be approved by an auditor.

FSSC 22000 is a certification scheme for food safety management systems aimed at organizing the work of food producers.

The scheme is designed for auditing and certification of food production and processing. In addition, there are variants of this scheme for livestock, food packaging, feed, catering, logistics, wholesale and retail trade. It was developed and managed by the Food Safety Certification Foundation (Netherlands).

Sedex is an international organization that facilitates the activities of its members in the global supply chain.

Sedex, which develops responsible and ethical business practices and improvement processes in the global supply chain, seeks to develop companies in the supply chain in ethical trade. Sedex’s approach helps buyers and suppliers better manage social and environmental risks by sharing and using data appropriately and positively with responsible resources. To this end, it provides methodological tools and services, as well as training to help companies identify and manage risks in their supply chains.

An FDA export certificate is an official confirmation of a product’s regulatory or marketing status based on information available at the time the certificate is issued (including, if applicable, confirmations provided by the person applying for the certificate). The fact that the FDA has issued an export certificate does not prevent the FDA from taking appropriate regulatory action with respect to the product covered by the certificate.

FDA issues different types of export certificates for different food products. Under certain circumstances, other federal agencies may issue export certificates for FDA-regulated foods, generally for compliance with foreign standards.

Bio Suisse is the largest umbrella organization for the development of organic production in Switzerland.

The requirements for organic production according to the private Bio Suisse standard are stricter than those of the EU organic legislation. Certification under this private standard is voluntary and is carried out in cooperation with the Bio Suisse organization. Organic Standard is a recognized certification body for conducting inspections in accordance with the requirements of this standard, approved by the Swiss body ICB AG, but the final decision is made by Bio Suisse experts.
