Soapwort products strengthen the excretory functions of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and digestive tract. They thin thick sputum and mucous membranes, facilitate coughing and have diaphoretic, choleretic and diuretic effects. They also contribute to the elimination of toxic metabolic products formed during metabolic processes, as well as in pathological changes in various organs. This can be considered a blood-purifying effect, which is not recognized by scientific medicine, but is used in herbal medicine in the absence of better alternatives.
In addition, soapwort binds cholesterol, preventing the formation of gallstones, facilitates the absorption of various food components and medicines in the digestive tract by reducing the surface tension of digestive juices and accelerating the emulsification of fats. It also has an antidiarrheal effect, accelerates the healing process of postoperative wounds.
The use of soapwort is recommended in case of chronic upper respiratory tract catarrh, especially in case of tracheal inflammation and bronchitis, when there is a dry cough and difficulty in coughing.
It is also used as an adjuvant in bronchial asthma, silicosis, poisoning due to bacterial infection, spleen diseases, dermatoses and gout.
The use of soapwort preparations is not recommended in case of bleeding from the digestive tract, acute catarrh of the stomach and intestines, as well as immediately after operations on the intestines, biliary and urinary tracts.
As an external remedy, this plant is used for seborrhea, dandruff and hair loss.
